News You (might be able to) Use (9/14/2011)

Is it just me, or is the rate of violence against trans-people on the rise?   I sincerely hope not, but it sure looks like it.  Diana, over at her little Corner of the Nutmeg State, reports that "Washington DC is becoming a place of death for us," and tells us about the third group of assaults on transwomen this summer in that city.

Meanwhile, the most high-profile case has been resolved.  Sort of:  the teen who pleased guilty to beating a transwoman in a Rosedale, MD McDonalds was sentenced to five years in prison, plus three of supervised probation.  The maximum sentence for such a crime is 35 years, but the 19-year-old woman had no previous record, and tearfully apologized in court.

Some transgender advocates felt the sentence was too short: Patrick Wojahn, board president of the Equality Maryland Foundation, says "If anything, five years may have been too short of an amount of time for the attack and the amount of hatred that was shown in the incident."  Read about the trial and verdict here.

If the incidences are on the rise, I blame crap like this.  Fox News' Dr. Keith Ablow opines that parents should keep their kids from watching "Dancing With the Stars" to protect vulnerable children from Chaz Bono. "It is a toxic and unnecessary byproduct of the tragic celebration of transgender surgerys" he says, "that millions of young people who do watch "Dancing with the Stars" will have to ponder this question: Maybe my problems really stem from the fact that I’m a girl inside a boy’s body (or a boy inside a girls body)."

The ignorance of members of the "medical establishment" regarding their own field never ceases to amaze me.  It leaves me pondering one thing: what medical school would award a degree to the likes of Dr. Ablow, and how can we go about getting their accreditation pulled?
